Afterglow continues a long-standing holiday tradition this week with “Songs of the Season: Christmas,” featuring music from Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, Stan Kenton, Dianne Reeves, and many more. “Songs of the Season: Christmas” airs Friday, December 19 at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU. “Holidays on Film” takes a look at seasonal song in the movies and on TV specials, with music from Meet Me in St. Louis, White Christmas, Holiday Inn, Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, Scrooge, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Lemon Drop Kid and more, performed by Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and others. “Holidays on Film” airs Friday, December 12 at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU.
Features on Afterglow this week include pianist and singer Patricia Barber’s recent tribute to Indiana songwriter Cole Porter, a new release from vocalist Robin McKelle, a reissue of Lorez Alexandria’s 1963 album For Swingers Only, and a previously-unreleased Chet Baker studio session from 1986.
This week on Afterglow we continue our recently-founded annual tradition of playing the music of Hoagy Carmichael on the Friday after Thanksgiving. (Hoagy was born November 22, 1899, so his birthday always falls close to the holiday.) We’ll feature interpretations of Carmichael classics from performers such as Art Blakey (with Freddie Hubbard soloing on “Skylark”), Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Sheila Jordan, Nat King Cole, Frank Morgan, Nina Simone, and many others.
