Charitable Lead Trusts A charitable lead trust offers unique estate planning advantages. Income-producing assets such as stock or real estate are irrevocably transferred to a lead trust, which pays income to an organization such as WFIU and/or WTIU for a number of years. Following the term of the trust, the property transfers back to other individuals, typically the donor's children or grandchildren, at reduced costs, because any appreciation of the asset while it is in the lead trust is not taxed when transferred back. It is an excellent way to transfer to your heirs assets that are expected to appreciate in value. Typically, IU Foundation serves as trustee for charitable lead trusts that name WFIU/WTIU irrevocable beneficiary of $500,000 or more. A charitable lead trust is good for individuals who face substantial estate and gift tax liability. To discuss your intentions or to learn more, contact Judy Witt at (812) 855-2935 or send an E-mail. Please notify us if you are including the station in your estate plans. We want to say “Thank you!” Plus, we can help you ensure that your gift makes the biggest possible impact. If you have not written a will yet, regardless of your charitable intent, please consider doing so. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . WFIU/WTIU cannot provide legal or tax advice.
