Charitable Remainder Trusts A charitable remainder trust lets you convert highly appreciated securities or real estate into income for life or a term of years without incurring capital gains tax when the asset is sold. The appreciated asset is transferred into an irrevocable charitable remainder trust and is then sold by the trustee of the trust. The proceeds are reinvested, and you and/or another designated beneficiary(ies) receive income for life or a specified term of years. When the trust ends, the remainder will be used by WFIU and/or WTIU for endowment. Your Benefits:
There are two types of charitable remainder trusts: A unitrust provides a flexible rate of return based on the value of the trust, which is revalued each year. You may make additional gifts to this trust. An annuity trust pays a fixed guaranteed income determined when the trust is established. You may not add gifts to this trust. The annuity trust is most attractive to individuals who wish to avoid market risk. We would be pleased to discuss the possibility of IU Foundation serving as trustee of your charitable remainder trust. Typically, IU Foundation serves as trustee for charitable remainder trusts that name WFIU/WTIU irrevocable beneficiary of $100,000 or more; that have an appropriate payout rate; and whose life income beneficiaries are 65 or older. To discuss your intentions or to learn more, contact Judy Witt at (812) 855-2935 or send an E-mail. Please notify us if you are including the station in your estate plans. We want to say “Thank you!” Plus, we can help you ensure that your gift makes the biggest possible impact. If you have not written a will yet, regardless of your charitable intent, please consider doing so. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . WFIU/WTIU cannot provide legal or tax advice.
